Hana Morford, Conductor. Open to elementary and intermediate strings musicians in elementary and middle school or up to age 14. Emphasizing the fundamentals of large ensemble playing, the String Ensemble is designed as an ideal first orchestral experience for late elementary through intermediate students of violin, viola, cello and double bass. Rehearsals will focus on the mastery of string orchestra techniques, listening, following, leadership, rhythm and blend of sound. The intense preparation of repertoire culminates in the performance of a Fall and Spring concert. Auditions will be held in January 2018 for new students on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the Preparatory office to schedule an audition. Auditions are open to all interested students but priority will be given to those who study privately at the Preparatory. Students who do not study privately at the Peabody Preparatory are not eligible to participate in the String Ensemble Competition. Audition Requirements: Sight-reading; performance of 1 piece (memorization not required); knowledge of scales (2, 3, 4 and 6 notes per bow, staccato & legato). Beginning understanding of spiccato. Scales Requirements Violin: 2 octave C or D Major in 3rd position and 2 octave Bb Major in 1st position. (G Major three octave scale recommended but not mandatory) Viola: 1 octave C or D Major in 3rd position and 1 octave Bb Major in 1st position Cello: 2 octave C, D, and G Major Bass: 1 octave Bb, C and D Major Recommended Minimum Repertoire Levels Violin: Suzuki Book 4 Viola: Suzuki Book 3 Cello: Suzuki Book 3 Double Bass: By teacher recommendation Note: Sight reading is a very important orchestral skill and will be emphasized in the audition. Playing at the required solo repertoire level does not insure acceptance into any orchestra.
