"In part one of a one-year course, the fundamental goal of Jazz History 1 will be to address the question “Why is jazz important?” This includes discussing both the musical and cultural impacts, learning the nuances of a new art form, building a receptive and knowledgeable audience, demonstrating that jazz is a huge part of American heritage, and exploring the parallels between jazz and both American and world history. The first semester will explore the traditional (pre-1900’s-1940) and beginning of the modern (1940-1960) divisions. Topics will be presented in an engaging lecture format with class interaction and discussion. Periodic quizzes will help to reinforce knowledge and guide more in depth questions. There will be an emphasis on listening. Prerequisite: None. Open to middle school age through adult."
