"In part one of a one-year course, Jazz Theory 1 focuses on the review and practical application of many rudimentary aspects of harmony as it relates to jazz. Pacing is determined by class progress. Beginning with intervals, the course provides a comprehensive overview of diatonic triads, 7th chords, and major and minor modes. This includes basic ear training and identification with techniques for efficient recognition. A strong introduction to Roman numeral analysis and common harmonic motion and progressions in jazz, as well as standard forms, is also provided. Time permitting, basic voice leading in jazz and bebop vocabulary, and its application, are explored. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of traditional music theory and notation."
