This course provides an introduction to racist dangers minorities faced in the 1940s through the 1960s and the Green Book guide that was created to keep them safe. Published in 1936, the Green Book guide was a product of the rising African American middle class having the finances and vehicles for travel but facing a world where social and legal restrictions barred them from accommodations. As a part of this course, students will research discriminatory laws that impacted travel, entertainment and the Black-owned establishments that provided safe harbor in the United States.
