First semester: principles of hand position, fingering, placing, sequencing of materials, and choice of music as these apply to beginning students at every age level. Second semester: continued discussion as above, plus a practicum level in which each member of the class must teach one student for 12 weeks, after which a mini-recital will provide the basis for group evaluation and final discussion. Graduate students are expected to prepare specialized teaching materials for beginners. May be taken by all majors beginning sophomore year and may be repeated (at least one year is required).
