What is music, and how do we study it? Who decides which musical works, practices, and histories matter—and how? Introduction to Music Studies is a gateway course for undergraduate students that examines music not only as sound or score, but as a social, cultural, and historical practice. The course draws on methodologies from historical musicology and ethnomusicology to explore how musical meaning emerges through performance, listening, circulation, and participation. Students will encounter music from a range of historical periods and global contexts while developing tools for critical reading and listening.
