Miles Davis is one of the most important figures in the history of modern jazz. Over the course of his career, he had a transformative effect, as a performer and composer, on every genre, from Bebop, Hard Bop and Cool, to Third Stream Music, Modal Jazz, Fusion, and Hip Hop. In this course, we will trace his contributions to American culture through an in-depth study of his recordings, from his earliest singles with Charlie Parker to albums like Birth of the Cool, ‘Round About Midnight, Milestones, Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud, Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, Porgy and Bess, In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, TuTu, and Doo Bop.
