Opera in the United States has often been thought of as an elitist art form that lacks relevance for today's audiences. In this course, we discuss what factors may have contributed to this view of current state of opera in America, and whether another future for opera in America might exist. After an introduction to opera as a genre and its performance in the United States today, we embark on our first unit, an in-depth exploration of the ingrained operatic canon and how the canon has been received and adapted to fit the needs of new audiences. We cover how new opera is created today, thinking in terms of both repertoire and institutional considerations and practicalities.
