An investigation into the musical traditions and structures typically associated with settings of the liturgical text of the Mass. The course also includes a study of the setting of the Requiem and its relation to the traditional liturgy. Composers that will be investigated include Bach, Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Britten. Emphasis is placed on developing a deeper understanding of large-scale structures. Open to graduate students only.
