This course aims at a deeper understanding of music through analysis. A variety of analytical approaches will be explored, including: 1) study of the elements of various "tonal" styles and their roles in musical strategy; 2) an introduction to Schenkerian analysis; and 3) the principles of twentieth-century music and their implications for works by various "post-tonal" composers.
