The largest share of the world’s poor live in the rural areas. Development of the rural space is thus a priority for poverty reduction. As the rural population is growing rapidly and labor absorption in agriculture and off-farm rural activities poses particular challenges, almost all developing countries experience significant rural-urban migration. The results are large urban agglomerations resulting, at times, in diseconomies of urban scales with high environmental and social costs. A successful development process requires both, structural transformation of the economy as well as rural transformations. This course will focus on inclusive rural transformation processes. Students will write their first (briefing) paper on a rural transformation in one country.
