The international economy has reached a critical juncture. The threats to the liberal international economic order have expanded and intensified in recent years. Will international markets for goods and capital remain open going forward? If not, what might replace the current international economic system that has been in place for decades? This course analyses these pressing questions. The course introduces students to major theories of International Political Economy. We then apply these theories to understand how the international economy has evolved over the past two centuries. The final part of the course applies insights from theory and history to understand the functioning and future prospects of the contemporary international economic system.
