The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is rarely out of the news cycle and for all the wrong reasons. The conflict has taken a terrible human toll, affects and is very much affected by on regional and global political dynamics and has no clear end in sight. The recent war in and around the Gaza Strip is but one front in the long and often violent struggle between Israel and other actors in the Middle East. This course unpacks and analyzes the key actors within this conflict and the diverse factors that drive it. It will address questions, including but not limited to: how did the conflict initially emerge and how has it changed over time? What solutions (if any) are currently on the table and what (or who) impedes conflict resolution? This course is recommended for students seeking a deeper immersion in the Israel-Arab conflict and for those who want to understand the origins and potential consequences of the current Israel/Gaza war. This course will be particularly useful for students who seek to better understand a prolonged conflict that still shapes the Middle East.
