This survey course examines Russia’s role in global politics from the late Cold War to the present, focusing on how Moscow engages with key regions including Europe, East and South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the United States, and the Arctic. After briefly reviewing Soviet global strategy during the Cold War, the course explores the evolution of Russia’s foreign and security policies since 1991 and how they shape contemporary geopolitical competition. Students will analyze Russia’s regional relationships through the lenses of major international relations theories—realism, liberalism, and constructivism—while assessing how Russia seeks to position itself within the evolving global order.
