The course examines the factors which cause the formation, sustain the maintenance, and occasion the breakdown of alliances. Theory is coupled with historical illustrations and cases from the 19th to the 20th century. After discussing the most accepted views on alliance politics, the course offers a new conceptual framework based upon four types of alliance. The last part will concentrate on the transformation of NATO from the Cold War to the post-Cold War period.
