The main objective of this course is to explore how international law and institutions have “governed” or “dealt with” the Global South. International legal regimes that reflect the important and highly consequential historical, social, political, economic and military issues and relationships (linkages and divisions) that affect the Global South will be examined in some depth. Weaknesses and gaps in the international legal framework and machinery currently in place in regard to these issues will also be considered. A South-North perspective will be brought to bear on the discussions in the course. Issues such as access to vaccines and other medical treatments; agricultural subsidies; socio-economic or developmental interventions by the IMF/World Bank; international migration; military interventions; climate change; the regulation of transnational corporations; investment disputes; debt relief; economic sanctions; the benefits of space exploration; human rights; and the mining of the deep seabed, may be explored.
