Suitable for non-lawyers, this introduction to international trade law will explore the legal foundation of the international trading system in a highly interactive setting. The emphasis will be on the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) that affect trade in goods and services, as well as intellectual property rules. Policy considerations will be emphasized – such as the developmental and public health implications of WTO rules (in particular Covid) and the relationship between WTO rules and the rules governing foreign direct investment, free trade agreements, environmental protection, human rights and labor rights. Particular attention will be given to current events, as well as important WTO Appellate Body decisions. In addition to regular readings, and PowerPoint presentations, students will learn by working on case studies. Class participation will be emphasized.
