The Wars That Made America

If you were a seventy five year old living in Boston in 1816 you would have experienced as an adult three world wars, three smaller naval conflicts, and chronic frontier warfare; you might very well have fought against Frenchmen, Canadians, English, Scots, Irish, Germans, North Africans, Indians, and even fellow Americans. The wars that made America from 1750 to 1815 shaped how Americans today understand strategy, civil-military relations, and internal security, as well as American borders and institutions of government. This course examines this period as both history and a set of case studies in strategic decision making. Click here to see evaluations, syllabi, and faculty bios
