War Theory introduces students to multiple theories and concepts and the history of war and warfare from Ancient to the end of the Cold War. Topics include the nature and character of war, warfare in different domains, the competition continuum, how different cultures theorize about war, and the evolution of war, warfare, and military thought. The course connects the historical context of the wars that inspired the theories covered in the class to give students a deeper understanding of how the theories emerged. The course introduces students to classical and modern war theories to enable students to think critically and analyze contemporary military challenges to more effectively anticipate and respond to complex problems. War Theory drives students to think deeply about war beyond the tactical level, to expand their thinking to the level of operations and strategy.
