This course is primarily aimed at preparing EES concentrators for the European Political Economy comprehensive exam (Comp II). It will provide students with an understanding of the three interlocking domains covered by Comp II: it will focus on the structure and functioning of West European countries, and particularly the four ‘pattern’ states – France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom; it will deal with the institutions and processes of European integration; it will review the structure and functioning of Central and East European countries. In addition, the course will introduce students to comparative political institutions, which represent a necessary background for Comp II. At the end of the course students will be familiar with how Europe’s political economies are organized, how they have changed over time, and how they have been influenced by processes of integration at the global and European levels. Click here to see evaluations, syllabi, and faculty bios
