The purpose of this course is to advance each student’s understanding of American history. I have taught this course several times here at the Center, and I have learned from experience that some things in American history are more important than others to Chinese graduate students (the students for whom this course is designed). That this should be so seems to me to be entirely logical and natural. Accordingly, I have attempted to organize the course in ways to engage the student as deeply and fully as possible – in the space of one semester.
