This research seminar explores the relationship between China’s economic development and its institutions and political system. Through engagement with existing literature and the development of original research, students will tackle ongoing debates and puzzles related to China’s political and economic development, state capitalism, innovation capacity, private sector development, corruption, and the creation of a welfare state. The course will teach students to consume research by presenting and evaluating key theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches in China studies, and it will help students produce research by developing relevant methodological and data analysis skills. The course will culminate in a research paper of at least 6000 words that will be developed through a series of short assignments throughout the course. This course is designed for second year students with a pre-existing knowledge of China’s economy and political system as well as some background in statistics and econometrics.
