This course is an examination of the social basis of politics, with a focus on ethnicity and the central role it plays in politics in Africa. We will pay particular attention to how ethnicity interacts with other social cleavages like religion, class, and gender to shape the construction of political identities, and how these, in turn, implicate political processes and outcomes in Africa South of the Sahara. We will examine the historical sources of ethnicity, its effects on state building, democratization, patterns of competition and conflict in contemporary Africa. Click here to see evaluations, syllabi, and faculty bios
