Reviews the integration of the Middle East and North Africa in a Western-dominated world-system. Examines the effect of the legacy of imperialism on the political economy of colonized societies, focusing on the pathologies developed by post-colonial states in the Middle East and Africa. Discusses state failures, rentier-state pathologies and authoritarian states and weak states in the context of regional states and societies.
