This course is a follow-on course to the Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) course, with an emphasis on applying practical GIS for academic or professional work. The course will reinforce the use of open-source desktop GIS software to solve problems of a spatial nature, beginning with framing the problem, through development of data requirements, collection of data from public sources, data processing and analysis, and map or application development. Work will be tailored to areas relevant for SAIS students, including international development, infrastructure management, and environmental resource management. At the completion of the course, it’s expected that students will be capable of performing basic spatial analysis on their own. In addition, students will be prepared to continue more advanced self-study using desktop GIS software and publicly-available data sets. Instruction by Kevin Chamberlain.
