Computer networks - the terrain upon which data travels within organizations, across regions and critical infrastructure, and around the world - forms the bedrock of cyberspace. Few concepts are more central to cybersecurity work, within industry and government alike, than networking and network analysis. This hands-on primer is designed to create familiarity and comfort with the fundamentals of monitoring and analyzing network traffic in search of vulnerabilities and malicious activity. The curriculum will (a) introduce students to core concepts (e.g. a diversity of computer networks, both in form and function) and (b) offer hands-on, technical experience with specific network analysis tools. We will also provide participants with opportunities for further learning beyond this primer to enable the curious to fully leverage networking and network analysis in their prospective careers post-SAIS. While no previous experience in cybersecurity or networking is required, students are urged to complete a short reading in advance of the Saturday session to enable a more intensive, hands-on approach in the classroom.
