The objective of the course is for students to gain a basic familiarity with the process and substance of management consulting, in order to determine if a career in the industry is right for them. Management consulting is a broadly defined activity, which essentially aims to solve a wide array of strategic, operational and organizational problems that enterprises face. Such problems may include: How do we expand globally? How do we transform our technology? How do we increase market share without adversely affecting profitability? “Consulting” is generally thought of as the domain of widely recognized consulting firms (e.g. McKinsey, Deloitte, etc.), but in reality the problem-solving skills used in consulting are applied by staff of large corporations, start-ups, governments and not-for-profits. The emphasis of the course will be on long-term strategy consulting, such as planning and execution. We will review the “process” of consulting (ie. The steps involved in solving enterprise problems), as well as several key frameworks and tools that are generally applied when solving problems (e.g. Porter’s Five Forces; The BCG Product Portfolio)
