This course, led by four corporate diplomacy practitioners at one of the largest multinational corporations, will introduce students to how businesses engage with the complex world around them. We will seek to identify best practice for pursuing three top corporate diplomacy goals: (1) anticipate and make sense of risks and opportunities in the external environment; (2) draw on both top-down and public diplomacy techniques to build impactful stakeholder partnerships – including partnerships with governments, multinationals, NGOs, and companies’ own grassroots constituencies; and (3) strengthen the corporation’s license to operate – aka its political legitimacy in society. Each of the four classes will include participatory exercises, exposing students to real-world corporate diplomacy challenges. Participants will get grounding in a skillset they can use to leverage their SAIS degree in a private-sector career in corporate diplomacy – and which is highly valued in government and civil society careers, as well.
