In today’s marketplace of ideas, there are plenty of tools for shaping opinion: social media, academic papers, think tank presentations, television appearances. If you really want to have an impact, though, few options pack the same punch as a well-written, 850-word opinion article in a major newspaper or magazine. Mastering this medium will give you a powerful tool for conveying your thoughts to policymakers and experts as well as to the broader public. But your efforts will be in vain if you can’t find a way to cut through the ambient noise of public discussion. We’ll look closely at how to make your articles stand out. This short course will teach participants how to write effective op-eds. Through careful study of models, we will study how to focus message and framing in order to achieve maximum effect.
