What is an ‘op-ed’? Which ones get published, and why? How can you write one that people will read? These are some of the questions that we will discuss in ‘Writing to be Read’ - a course for anyone who wants their political and policy ideas to reach larger audiences. The course is a combination of four group tutorials on Saturday mornings, plus two individual student sessions, to be scheduled at students’ and instructors’ convenience. The group tutorials will dissect and discuss op-eds, longform articles and other kinds of popular writing, with an eye towards understanding what works and what doesn’t. This course is application based, and the admittance is based on the strength of your application. The application consists of a CV and any piece of published writing, including articles in student journals and blog posts. Please send the application to saispsc@jh.edu by 12:00 pm Jan 26 ET instead of registering in SIS.
