How well do you communicate through the camera on your phone or laptop? Can you go deftly from the virtual classroom to an on-line job interview, using video conference software like Zoom, WebEx or Skype? Could you step into the new SAIS studios in the basement of 555 and handle a live television interview on a complex foreign policy crisis? Complementing SAIS skills courses on Face-to-Face (FtF) communication, this course focuses on the other end of the telescope: remote communication through a lens, using computer-mediated (CM) platforms. Going beyond ‘you’re muted’ and other common pitfalls, this course introduces basic communications theory. Beyond technique, you will learn that the key to speaking clearly and concisely about foreign policy is how you read, think and understand foreign policy and current events. You will learn how to raise your ‘SAIS-Q’ -- your foreign policy IQ – through the challenge of communicating complex issues to a mass broadcast audience. Ideally, this will encourage you to take advantage of the new media facilities at 555.
