This intensive professional skills course is designed to prepare students with practical writing skills for a policy career inside or outside of government. Students will study, practice, and critique various genres of policy writing including memoranda, briefing materials, and op-eds. Students will critically evaluate their own writing and that of others in the class, and will produce a checklist of best practices for policy writing that they can use for future assignments. Upon completing this course, students should be able to compose well-structured, clear, persuasive prose, identify the distinguishing features of policy writing, critically evaluate their own writing, and that of others, and develop their own set of best practices for policy writing
